EDN’s Operations or Departmental Manager apprenticeship is a Level 5 programme aimed at mid-level managers, senior managers and department heads. The apprenticeship focuses on developing leadership styles, establishing strategies, understanding business finance and delivering results.
This course takes a minimum of 15 months to complete.
What is an Operations or Department Manager?
An operations or department manager is responsible for looking after projects, teams or departments. Often reporting to a senior manager or business owner, operations or department managers work across all sectors of industry and in all business sizes.
Also known as regional managers or division managers, operations or department managers are responsible for looking after teams, dealing with change, managing budgets, resources, developing talent and coaching or mentoring.
An operations or department manager’s responsibilities can include:
- Setting KPIs and monitoring performance
- Creating plans for sales and marketing
- Managing budgets, making contingency plans
- Motivating and leading multiple teams
- Communicating effectively through every channel
- Analysing data and producing reports
- Nurturing talent within teams.
Employers will set their own entry requirements in order to start on this apprenticeship, but typically requires five GCSEs at Grade C or higher.
On completion of the Operations or Departmental Manager Level 5 apprenticeship, apprentices can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). After 3 years of management experience, this can progress to Chartered Manager status with the CMI.

Non Levy Payers – £350 + VAT
Apprentices will need to pass maths and English Functional Skills level 2 during their apprenticeship.
The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Operations or Departmental Manager Apprenticeship includes:
- Professional discussion, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
- Project proposal, presentation and questioning.
EDN assigns a designated Vocational Trainer to each apprentice who will be in regular contact with the apprentice to coach, mentor and discuss progress.
