Course summary

EDN’s Operations or Department Manager Plus apprenticeship is a Level 5 programme with an additional CMI Level 7 Award of Strategic Management and Leadership Practice.

This apprenticeship is aimed at mid-level managers, senior managers, department heads progressing through to board level and C-Suite Executives. The programme focuses on leadership styles, implementing strategies, business finance, delivering results and beyond.

This course takes a minimum of 18 months to complete.

What is the Level 5 Operational Department Manager Plus apprenticeship?

An operations or department manager is responsible for looking after projects, teams or departments. Often reporting to a senior manager or business owner, operations or department managers work across all sectors of industry and in all business sizes. 

The Level 5 Operational Department Manager apprenticeship programme modules cover typical responsibilities mid-level and senior managers would encounter. These include:

  • Setting KPIs and monitoring performance
  • Creating plans for sales and marketing
  • Managing budgets, making contingency plans
  • Motivating and leading multiple teams
  • Communicating effectively through every channel
  • Analysing data and producing reports
  • Nurturing talent within teams.

Candidates on this level 5 apprenticeship will also complete the following unit from the CMI Level 7 Award of Strategic Management and Leadership Practice:

Strategic Leadership (36 GLH)

This unit focuses on a leader’s ability to respond creatively to organisational challenges, plus setting and delivering sustainable strategic goals.

Employers will set their own entry requirements in order to start on this apprenticeship, but typically requires five GCSEs at Grade C or higher.

On completion of the Operations or Departmental Manager Level 5 apprenticeship, apprentices can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). After 3 years of management experience, this can progress to Chartered Manager status with the CMI.

End assessment

The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Operations or Department Manager Apprenticeship includes:

  • Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
  • Project proposal, presentation and questioning.

Professional support

EDN assigns a designated Training Consultant to each apprentice. The EDN Training Consultant will be in contact with the apprentice to coach, mentor and discuss progress.
